Lingayat Marriage Biodata Format

A Lingayat marriage biodata format has the usual birth details and family details, plus the lines Lingayat elders read first. The sub-sect (such as Panchamasali, Banajiga, Sadar or Jangam), the matha the family follows, and the native place with taluk. Gotra and horoscope lines go in only if your family uses them.

What Goes in a Lingayat Biodata for Marriage?

A Lingayat biodata for marriage starts like any other biodata. Birth details and studies come first, then work and family. After that come the lines that place the family. Elders in Hubballi or Solapur look for three things before they pass a biodata on.

  1. The sub-sect, such as Panchamasali, Banajiga, Adi Banajiga, Sadar, Jangam, Ganiga or Shilvant.
  2. The matha or guru the family follows.
  3. The native place with taluk and district.

Some families write Lingayat and some write Veerashaiva or Veerashaiva Lingayat. Write the word your family uses. Both are in our community list, and so is the plain spelling Lingayath.

Why the Sub-Sect and Matha Come Before Gotra

Lingayats follow the teachings of Basavanna, the 12th-century saint who lived in Kalyana. Members wear the ishtalinga, and the family priest usually comes from the Jangama community. Many Lingayat families read the sub-sect and the matha before they ask about any gotra.

Put the sub-sect in Caste / Community. Type Panchamasali and the list offers it. You can pick it, or keep typing and write "Lingayat (Panchamasali)" the way your family writes it. Typed text prints exactly as you typed it.

The matha has no field of its own, so add it with Add Your Own Field in Personal Details. Call the field Matha, or Guru Peetha if that is what your family says, and write the name with the place: "Siddaganga Matha, Tumakuru" or "Murugha Matha, Chitradurga". A village matha is fine too. Elders know the local ones.

If your family keeps a gotra, open Add More Details in the horoscope section and tap Gotra. If the family does not use one, leave it out. Nobody will ask.

Do Lingayat Families Match Horoscopes?

It depends on the family. Basavanna set aside astrology, and some Lingayat families do not look at the jataka at all. Many others match rasi and nakshatra before the first meeting, mostly in north Karnataka towns.

Our form keeps the horoscope section on for a Hindu biodata. It fills rasi, nakshatra with pada and lagna from the date, time and place of birth. Kuja dosha goes in the Chevvai / Manglik line, where you choose No, Yes, Partial or Don't Know yourself. The form never fills that one.

Family does not match horoscopes? Switch off "Include horoscope on the biodata" and nothing about stars prints. Add one line at the end of About Me, "Horoscope not required", so the other side does not ask for the jataka.

Family Background and Native Place

North Karnataka families often write the father's land and crops in detail. Old Mysore families tend to write the job and the city. Both are normal.

Write the native place with taluk and district even if the family now lives in Pune or abroad. "Navalgund, Dharwad district" tells a Dharwad uncle far more than "Karnataka". Land goes in the Property chip of Family Details, and the sodara mava (maternal uncle) goes in the Maternal Uncle chip, if your family gives him a part in the talks.

Header Line and Symbol

Many Lingayat families print a line to Basavanna or to their guru at the top. Our symbol list has no ishtalinga. You can choose Om in its place, or switch the symbol off. For the Blessing Line, the Kannada lines in our list include ಶ್ರೀ ಗುರುಭ್ಯೋ ನಮಃ (Shri Gurubhyo Namah). If your family uses a Basava line, tap Write My Own and type it in Kannada or in English letters.

Which Language Should It Print In?

Karnataka families usually print in Kannada. Lingayat families in Solapur, Latur, Sangli and Kolhapur often print in Marathi, and families with relatives in Bengaluru or abroad often print in English.

Type the details in English and pick the print language. Labels such as Date of Birth print in that script, and so do rasi and nakshatra. Names and anything you typed print as you typed them. Our Kannada marriage biodata page shows how the Kannada print looks.

Melavas and WhatsApp Groups

Lingayat biodatas go round through relatives, matha-linked groups, vadhu-var melavas in cities like Hubballi-Dharwad and Belagavi, and samaj WhatsApp groups. We do not run any group. Send the image in WhatsApp groups and keep the PDF for printing. If you do not want the girl's own number in a big group, add her father as Contact Person.
