Who Writes a Buddhist Biodata for Marriage?

Most Buddhist biodatas in India come from Ambedkarite Buddhist families in Maharashtra, in Nagpur, Amravati, Aurangabad, Pune and Mumbai, and from their relatives in other states. On 14 October 1956, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar took up Buddhism at Deekshabhoomi in Nagpur with lakhs of followers, and many families trace their Buddhism to that day.

There are also Buddhist families in Ladakh, Sikkim, Darjeeling and Arunachal, and Barua families in Bengal and Tripura. The format below works for all of them.

What Changes from a Hindu Biodata

The body of the biodata stays the same: personal details, education, job, family and contact. What usually goes out is the horoscope. Most Ambedkarite families do not match kundlis or write gotra, rashi or devak.

When you choose Buddhist as the Religion in our form, the horoscope section switches off by itself. So no rasi or nakshatra prints. Education and the job often get the most space, with the degree and the post written in full.

Buddhist Marriage Biodata Format in English

Many families make the biodata in English, especially when the boy or girl works in Pune, Bengaluru or abroad. The girl below is made up, and so is her family. The phone number is masked.

For a Buddhist boy, add Annual Income from Add More Details and write the job exactly: "Junior Engineer, PWD, Chandrapur" or "Software developer, Pune". Families of girls read that line twice.

Caste / Community is a field in the form. Many Ambedkarite families leave it empty and let the Religion line say Buddhist. Fill it only if your family wants to.

The Relatives Line and the Mama

Marathi biodatas often carry a line called नातेवाईक: the surnames of close relatives' families. It helps the other side find people they know. Our form has no such field, so tap Add Your Own Field in Family Details, name it Relatives or नातेवाईक, and list the surnames.

The mama goes in Maternal Uncle, from Add More Details in Family Details. Write his name and village: "Prakash Gaikwad, Amravati".

On a Marathi biodata, many families put कु. before a girl's name and चि. before a boy's name. Type it in Full Name if your family uses it.

Dhamma Chakra and the Jai Bhim Line at the Top

The symbol for a Buddhist biodata is the Dhamma Chakra. It comes in by itself when you choose Buddhist as the Religion. We have no picture of the Buddha or of Babasaheb to choose, and the one photo box on every design is for the boy or girl.

The Blessing Line offers these Buddhist lines:

  • नमो बुद्धाय, जय भीम
  • ॥ नमो बुद्धाय ॥
  • बुद्धं सरणं गच्छामि
  • नमो तस्स भगवतो अरहतो सम्मासम्बुद्धस्स
  • नमो बुद्धाय in Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali and Odia scripts, such as నమో బుద్ధాయ and নমো বুদ্ধায়

A Marathi or Hindi biodata starts with a line already switched on. On an English biodata the Blessing Line starts off. Turn it on to pick a line, or choose Write My Own and type "Namo Buddhaya, Jai Bhim" in English letters.

Marathi, Hindi or English?

Marathi suits most families in Vidarbha and Marathwada, where elders read it fastest. English suits relatives outside Maharashtra and abroad. You can type the details in English and print the labels in Marathi, so you can make one in each and send whichever fits.

How Buddhist Biodatas Are Shared

Most biodatas now go on WhatsApp first, through relatives and community groups. Families also take printed copies to vadhu-var parichay melavas run by Buddhist societies and viharas. Download the image for WhatsApp and the PDF for printing.
