A marriage muhurat by date of birth is found in two steps. First you take the general marriage dates for the year from a panchang. Then the priest keeps only the days that suit both the bride's and the groom's moon sign (rasi) and birth star (nakshatra), using checks called chandrabala, tarabala and gurubala.
Out of 96 general dates in 2027, a couple may end up with a handful that pass for both. That is normal.
General Muhurat and Personal Muhurat
The yearly lists on Drik Panchang and Prokerala are general. They check the month, the planets and the day's nakshatra, yoga and karana, and they are the same for every couple in a city. They do not know who is getting married.
A personal muhurat adds the couple. The priest looks at where the Moon, Jupiter and the day's nakshatra stand with respect to each person's birth chart. So the date of birth, the time of birth and the place of birth of both sides all matter. The time matters because it fixes the lagna and, near a boundary, can change the nakshatra itself.
Our guide on how vivah muhurat is calculated explains the general checks in detail.
First, Shortlist from the Yearly Calendar
Start with the month that suits both families, for weather, leave and exams. Then write down every general marriage day in that month. Our vivah muhurat 2027 list has all 96 days on Drik Panchang for New Delhi, and each month page has the nakshatra for each date.
Note the nakshatra of each date. You will need it in the next two steps.
Then Filter by Both Moon Signs (Chandrabala)
Chandrabala is the strength of the Moon on that day, counted from a person's own moon sign. Drik Panchang's daily chandrabalam table follows this pattern:
| Moon that day is in this house from your moon sign | Result |
|---|---|
| 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th | Good |
| 2nd, 5th, 9th | Puja needed |
| 4th, 8th, 12th | Bad |
Count the bride's moon sign as 1 and go forward through the zodiac to the sign the Moon is in that day. Do the same for the groom.
Then Check Tarabala and Gurubala
Tarabala compares the day's nakshatra with the birth nakshatra. Count from the birth star to the day's star, including both, and divide by 9. The remainder gives the tara.
| Remainder | Tara | Result on Drik Panchang's daily table |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Janma | Not good |
| 2 | Sampat | Very good |
| 3 | Vipat | Bad |
| 4 | Kshema | Good |
| 5 | Pratyari | Not good |
| 6 | Sadhaka | Very good |
| 7 | Naidhana | Totally bad |
| 8 | Mitra | Good |
| 0 (9) | Param Mitra | Good |
Gurubala looks at Jupiter's transit, counted from the person's moon sign. It is commonly treated as strong when Jupiter is in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th house from the moon sign. Jupiter stays in one sign for about a year, so gurubala often decides the year or season, not the day. Priests differ on whose gurubala they check, and how strictly, so follow your family priest here.
A Worked Example from May and June 2027
Say the bride's birth star is Rohini, in Vrishabha rasi, and the groom's is Hasta, in Kanya rasi. They want a wedding between May and June 2027. These are some general dates from Drik Panchang, with the results of steps 2 and 3:
| Date | Nakshatra (Moon sign) | Bride chandrabala | Groom chandrabala | Bride tarabala | Groom tarabala |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 13 May | Magha (Simha) | 4th, bad | 12th, bad | Naidhana | Naidhana |
| 19 May | Swati (Tula) | 6th, good | 2nd, puja needed | Vipat | Vipat |
| 21 May | Anuradha (Vrischika) | 7th, good | 3rd, good | Pratyari | Pratyari |
| 23 May | Mula (Dhanu) | 8th, bad | 4th, bad | Naidhana | Naidhana |
| 4 May, 1 June, 28 June | Revati (Meena) | 11th, good | 7th, good | Sadhaka | Sadhaka |
Only the Revati dates pass every column for both. In May and June 2027, those are 4 May (4:14 pm to 7:30 pm), 1 June (5:24 am to 6:46 am) and 28 June (5:26 am to 11:45 am), New Delhi time. Three dates out of 34 general ones.
The priest would then check gurubala for the season and fix the lagna inside one of these windows. The example is only to show the method. Your own priest may weigh the checks differently, and a real decision should use both full kundlis.
The Name-Only Method
When a birth time is not known, many priests use the name instead. Each nakshatra pada has a starting syllable, and the first syllable of the name is taken as the birth star. This is the same system families use to choose a baby's name.
The name method is rough. A name may have been chosen for other reasons, and two people with the same initial get the same result. Use it only when no birth details exist, and tell the priest that you are doing so.
Free Calculators and When to Ask a Pandit
Drik Panchang publishes a daily chandrabalam table and a daily tarabalam table for any city. With the two moon signs and birth stars, you can check a shortlist yourself in ten minutes.
Some sites also offer a "marriage date calculator by date of birth". These tools apply some or all of the checks above, but they rarely say which. Treat their output as a shortlist and take it to a priest, who will also look at the lagna, the dasha periods and any family customs, such as avoiding Jyeshtha for an eldest child.
A practical tip. Write both sets of birth details clearly before you go: date, time, place, rasi and nakshatra. Hello Biodata fills in rasi, nakshatra and lagna from the date, time and place of birth, so the biodata you already sent can double as the priest's reference sheet. It downloads as a PDF or a JPG.
Common questions
How to Find Marriage Muhurat by Date of Birth?
Take the general marriage dates for your month from a panchang, then keep only the days with good chandrabala and tarabala for both the bride and the groom. A priest then checks gurubala and fixes the lagna.
How to Find Vivah Muhurat by Name and Date of Birth?
If the date and time of birth are known, use them. If not, the first syllable of the name gives a birth nakshatra, and the same checks are done with that.
Can I Find a Marriage Date from My Kundli?
Yes. The kundli gives your moon sign and birth star, which are what the personal checks need. Both kundlis are used, not just one.
What Is Tarabala and Chandrabala?
Chandrabala checks where the Moon is that day from your moon sign. Tarabala checks the day's nakshatra against your birth nakshatra, in groups of nine.
Is the Bride's or Groom's Chart Used?
Both, in most families. Some traditions give more weight to particular checks for the bride or the groom, so ask your priest how he applies them.
