NRI marriage fraud usually follows one pattern. A groom living abroad marries quickly in India, sometimes takes dowry, and then leaves the bride behind or turns out to be already married. To protect a daughter, verify his visa, job and marital status in that country before the wedding, and register the marriage in India.
If it has already happened, complain to the National Commission for Women's NRI Cell. Do it soon.
Most NRI proposals are genuine. A few simple checks protect the family without insulting the good ones.
How Big Is the Problem?
Big enough that the government has a dedicated system for it. The National Commission for Women set up an NRI Cell in 2009 to take complaints about marriages with overseas Indians. Its page lists the usual complaints: domestic violence, desertion, dowry demands, and the husband or in-laws taking away the woman's passport.
In February 2024 the Law Commission of India, in its 287th report, called desertion by NRI spouses a serious problem. It recommended compulsory registration of every marriage between an NRI or OCI and an Indian citizen. That is a recommendation. Until a law is passed, registration still depends on your state's rules.
Red Flags Before the Wedding
Any one of these is a reason to slow down. Two or more together are a reason to stop and check properly.
- The family wants the wedding within two or three weeks, "because his leave is short".
- He avoids video calls from his home or office abroad.
- Nobody in your circle knows anyone who knows his family.
- Details about his job are vague: "IT company in the US", "business in Canada".
- He or his parents ask for money, gold or tickets, before or after the wedding.
- He says the visa for the bride will be "sorted later", with no timeline.
- They do not want the marriage registered, or want it registered "after he comes back".
- His age, divorce status or earlier marriage abroad keeps changing in the story.
Hurry is the biggest warning. Genuine NRI families can wait a few months for proper checks. A fraud cannot.
Verification Checklist for an NRI Groom
Ask for these politely. Say that you ask every family the same questions. You do. A genuine family will not mind, and many will ask for the same papers from you.
| What to check | How to check it |
|---|---|
| Passport | See the original; note the number and any earlier marriage details |
| Visa or residency status | Work visa, green card, PR card or citizenship, with the expiry date |
| Job | Offer letter, recent payslips, a LinkedIn profile that matches; call the company's main office number from its website, not a number he gives |
| Address abroad | A lease or utility bill; ask a relative or friend in that city to visit |
| Marital status | Ask directly whether he has married before, in India or abroad, and see the divorce decree if he has |
| Spouse visa plan | Which visa the bride will get, who applies, and how long it takes |
| Family in India | Visit their home in India; meet neighbours and relatives |
| Previous cases | Ask whether any police or court case is pending in India or abroad |
Families living abroad often know people in the same city through temples, gurdwaras or community associations. A short call there can tell you more than any document.
Write his full details in your own copy of the biodata exchange: passport number, address abroad, employer, and the names of his parents. If anything goes wrong later, the police and the NCW will ask for exactly these.
Register the Marriage, and Keep Copies
Register the marriage in India before the groom flies back. A marriage certificate is the proof the bride will need for a spouse visa, a complaint, maintenance, or a divorce case. Hindu marriages are registered under the rules each state makes under section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
Keep copies of these with the bride's parents as well as with her:
- the marriage certificate
- his passport and visa pages
- his address abroad and employer details
- wedding photos and the invitation card
- a list of all gifts and money given, with bills
The bride should keep her own passport with her at all times. Taking away a wife's passport is one of the most common complaints the NCW NRI Cell gets.
If a Bride Has Been Abandoned, First Steps
If the husband has stopped calling, left without her, or she has been sent back, act early. Weeks matter.
- Collect every document listed above, and every message, call log and payment record.
- File a police complaint in India, at the station where she or her parents live. Cruelty and dowry demands are offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
- Register a complaint with the NCW NRI Cell, online or by post.
- If she is abroad, contact the nearest Indian embassy or consulate, and register a grievance on MADAD, the Ministry of External Affairs' consular grievance portal.
- Ask for a free lawyer through the National Legal Services Authority on 15100.
If she is in danger abroad, the embassy is the first call. In India, call 112.
Complaint Routes
| Where | What they can do |
|---|---|
| NCW NRI Cell | Takes complaints from India and abroad, writes to authorities, mediates, and helps women reach the MEA's legal and financial aid scheme |
| Police in India | Registers an FIR, investigates; a Look Out Circular can be sought against a husband in serious cases |
| Regional Passport Office | The NCW may ask it to act on the husband's passport, including impounding it |
| Indian embassy or consulate | Help abroad, information on local lawyers and shelters, and the MEA scheme |
| Family court in India | Maintenance, custody, and divorce if she wants one |
The NCW NRI Cell's online form is linked from its page. Its contact details there include the email nricell-ncw@nic.in.
Legal Remedies Abroad
A court in India can pass orders for maintenance or custody. Making a husband abroad obey them is hard. That is the honest position. The Law Commission said much the same in its report.
Some families also file a case in the country where the husband lives. Laws there may give the wife rights to maintenance or a share of property. The embassy can usually share a list of local lawyers, and the MEA scheme may help with legal costs.
Before You Say Yes to an NRI Proposal
Treat an NRI proposal like any other, and give it more time, not less. Ask the same questions you would ask a boy in your own town. Our list of questions to ask before an arranged marriage works for NRI matches too. Settle the dowry question early, as our guide on what to do about a dowry demand explains.
A clear biodata from your side helps the other family check you too. You can make one here and share it as a PDF or JPG.
Common questions
How Do I Verify an NRI Groom Before Marriage?
See his original passport and visa, his job papers and a proof of address abroad, and confirm his marital status directly. Ask someone you trust in that city to visit or make enquiries.
Where Can an Abandoned NRI Bride Complain?
To the NCW NRI Cell, the police in India, and the Indian embassy or consulate in the husband's country. MADAD, the MEA's online portal, takes consular grievances from abroad.
Is Registration of NRI Marriages Compulsory?
Registration rules are made by each state. The Law Commission recommended in 2024 that all NRI and OCI marriages with Indian citizens be compulsorily registered. Register yours anyway, because it is the bride's main proof.
Can the NRI Husband's Passport Be Impounded?
The NCW can ask the Regional Passport Office to act against the husband's passport, and impounding is one option. Whether it happens depends on the facts and the authority's decision.
What If the Bride's Passport Is with the In-Laws?
That is one of the complaints the NCW NRI Cell handles. Complain to the Cell and the police, and ask the Passport Office about getting a new one.
