Nadi dosha is present when the boy and the girl were born under nakshatras of the same nadi: Adi, Madhya or Antya. Nadi koota then scores 0 out of 8 in gun milan. Because nadi carries the most points of the 8 kootas, most North Indian pandits treat nadi dosha as the most serious finding in a kundli match, unless a cancellation applies.
Every nakshatra belongs to exactly one nadi, so you can check nadi dosha yourself in a minute with the table below.
What Nadi Koota Is
Nadi koota is the eighth and last koota of ashtakoot gun milan. It sorts the 27 nakshatras into three groups of nine. The names come from Ayurveda's three doshas:
| Nadi | Linked dosha in Ayurveda |
|---|---|
| Adi | Vata |
| Madhya | Pitta |
| Antya | Kapha |
Different nadis give the full 8. Same nadi gives 0. Nothing in between.
Why Nadi Carries the Most Points
The kootas are weighted from 1 for varna up to 8 for nadi. Nadi alone is worth more than varna, vashya and tara put together.
Drik Panchang's matching page goes further than the points. It says nadi koota is given "supreme priority", and that with nadi unfavourable, even a match of 28 gunas is considered inauspicious. So a 28-guna match with nadi dosha can be read as worse than a 20-guna match without it.
Which Nakshatra Is in Which Nadi
| Nadi | Nakshatras |
|---|---|
| Adi | Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Madhya | Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Antya | Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati |
There is a pattern if you go in star order. Ashwini is Adi, Bharani Madhya, Krittika Antya. Then it turns back: Rohini Antya, Mrigashira Madhya, Ardra Adi. Then it repeats, six stars at a time.
Two quick checks. A boy born in Rohini and a girl born in Hasta are Antya and Adi. Different nadis, so full 8. A boy born in Pushya and a girl born in Chitra are both Madhya. That is nadi dosha.
Same Nakshatra, Same Nadi
Two people born under the same nakshatra always share a nadi. So a same-star couple starts with nadi at 0 every time.
This is also where the best-known exceptions come in. Texts quoted by astrologers say the dosha does not apply when the star is the same but the rasi is different, or the rasi is the same but the star is different. Some also accept different padas of the same star. Our page on nadi dosha cancellation lists these rules and where they come from.
What Nadi Dosha Is Believed to Affect
In traditional belief, nadi is about the couple's physical make-up. The nadi kootam article on OnlineJyotish says nadi is "traditionally associated with health, constitution and the prospects of progeny". It also notes that Muhurta Chintamani calls a same-nadi marriage inauspicious and is harshest on Madhya with Madhya.
These are beliefs, handed down in the texts. We know of no medical study that links nadi to a couple's health or children. Families who want certainty about health often ask for a blood test before marriage, such as a thalassemia screening, which checks something real and measurable.
When Nadi Dosha Does Not Apply
Astrologers do not all agree, but these are the cases most often named:
- Same rasi, different nakshatra. For example, both in Vrishabha rasi, one Krittika and one Rohini.
- Same nakshatra, different rasi. Nine stars span two rasis (Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada), so this can happen.
- Same nakshatra, different pada, accepted by some astrologers only.
- Certain nakshatras named in the texts as free of eka nadi dosha.
- The rasi lords of the two are the same or friends.
The full list, with the texts each rule comes from, is on the cancellation page. Ask your pandit which of these he follows.
Nadi Dosha in North and South Indian Matching
Nadi dosha is mainly a North Indian worry. It belongs to the 36-point ashtakoot system.
South Indian thirumana porutham has no nadi check among its 10 poruthams. Tamil and Kerala jothidars give that top place to rajju instead. A Tamil family may never have heard of nadi dosha, while a family from Jaipur may treat it as the first thing to check. See 10 porutham for marriage for the South Indian list.
Many Telugu families use the ashtakoota points out of 36, nadi included, and then look at the stars too. If the families come from different regions, agree on the system first.
How Serious Is Nadi Dosha?
For most North Indian pandits, an uncancelled nadi dosha is enough to advise against a match, even with a good total. With a cancellation, many approve it.
Families who still wish to go ahead usually do a remedy in faith. Mahamrityunjaya jaap, a nadi dosha nivaran puja, or a donation such as grain or a cow (godaan) are the ones astrologers most often suggest. None of them change the score. They are done so the family and the pandit are at peace with the decision.
If the match fails on nadi and you are unsure what to do, read what to do when the kundli is not matching.
Putting Nadi on the Biodata
In North India and Maharashtra, many families print the nadi and gana on the biodata, next to the rasi and nakshatra. It saves a phone call, because the other side can see a nadi clash at once.
Our maker works out the rasi and nakshatra from the birth date, time and place, but it has no Nadi or Gana field. Add them with Add Your Own Field in the Horoscope section, for example "Nadi: Antya" and "Gan: Manushya", as your family horoscope shows. Make a biodata with the horoscope filled in to try it.
Bhakoot, the koota next to nadi in weight, is explained in bhakoot dosha. All 8 kootas are in the 36 gun milan guide.
Common questions
What Is Nadi Dosha in Marriage?
Nadi dosha means the boy and girl were born in nakshatras of the same nadi. Nadi koota then gives 0 out of 8.
Can Same Nadi Couples Marry?
Many do, especially when a cancellation applies, such as the same rasi with different stars. Without a cancellation, most North Indian pandits advise against it.
Why Is Nadi Given 8 Points?
Nadi carries the highest weight of the 8 kootas because the texts link it to health and children. Drik Panchang says it is given supreme priority in matching.
Is Nadi Dosha Checked in South India?
Not in Tamil and Kerala porutham, which does not include nadi. Families who use the 36-point system, including many Telugu families, do check it.
Which Nadi Is the Most Serious to Share?
Muhurta Chintamani is harshest on Madhya with Madhya, as OnlineJyotish quotes it. Most pandits treat any same-nadi result as nadi dosha.
