Horoscope Matching in Telugu, How Families Do It

Telugu families usually match horoscopes on ashtakoota points, a score out of 36, like the North Indian gun milan. They also look closely at the two nakshatrams, check kuja dosham (manglik) separately, and make sure the boy and girl are not of the same gotram. Many families want 18 points or more, and the pandit reads the nadi and bhakoota points before the total.

So Telugu matching sits between the North Indian score and the Tamil star porutham. This page explains each part in plain words.

How Telugu Families Match a Jathakam

The jathakam (horoscope) is usually asked for right after the first talk between the families, often before the pelli choopulu (the first formal visit to see the girl).

The order most families follow:

  1. Gotram check. If both are of the same gotram, most families stop here.
  2. Nakshatram and rasi check, from the biodata.
  3. Ashtakoota points out of 36.
  4. Kuja dosham for both.
  5. If all looks fine, the full jathakam goes to the family purohit or siddhanti for a final look.

Ashtakoota Points in Telugu Matching

Ashtakoota means "eight kootas". These are the same 8 used in North India: varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, gana, bhakoota and nadi, worth 1 to 8 points each and 36 in all. Prokerala's Telugu matching page states that its result is based on this ashtakoota system with compatibility counted out of 36.

Telugu families tend to say "gunalu" or "points". A purohit may say "36 ki 24 points vachayi" for a score of 24.

PointsHow most families read it
Below 18Usually not taken forward
18 to 24Acceptable, if nadi and bhakoota are fine
25 and aboveGood

Some astrologers set the bar higher. The star-match tool on OnlineJyotish, run by an astrologer in Telangana, lists only pairs scoring above 25 out of 36. It also adds that a score above 25 does not guarantee a successful marriage, and that the full charts should still be seen.

Points alone can mislead. A 0 in nadi or bhakoota is a dosha, whatever the total. Our 36 gun milan guide explains each koota.

Nakshatra Porutham

Telugu families give the nakshatram a lot of weight, even beyond the points. Some purohits also check star-based poruthams like rajju and vedha, which Tamil families rely on, along with the ashtakoota score.

The pada matters too. OnlineJyotish warns that some nakshatrams fall across two rasis, so picking only the nakshatram can give a wrong varna, vashya, graha maitri or bhakoota score. Always give the padam along with the star.

Pairs of the same nakshatram are usually avoided unless the purohit finds an exception. Our nakshatra matching guide has all 27 stars with their gana, nadi and rajju in one table.

Kuja Dosham

Kuja dosham is the Telugu name for manglik dosha, from Kuja, the Sanskrit name for Mars. A person has kuja dosham when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. The Drik Panchang mangal dosha page notes that South Indian astrologers usually do not count the 1st house.

Kuja dosham is not part of the 36 points. It is checked on its own. The usual rule is that a kuja dosham jathakam should be matched with another kuja dosham jathakam, unless the dosha is cancelled. Ask your purohit which cancellations he accepts.

Gotram Rules

Most Telugu Hindu families do not marry within the same gotram. The idea is that people of one gotram descend from the same rishi and are distant kin.

In Telugu families the inti peru (house name, used like a surname) is different from the gotram. Two families with different inti perlu can still share a gotram, so check the gotram itself. Our page on what is gotra explains how gotras work and how to find yours if the family is unsure.

Some Telugu communities also follow a custom of marriage between cross-cousins, such as a girl marrying her maternal uncle's son. Practice differs a lot between communities, so go by your own family's rule.

The Jathakam on Your Biodata

A Telugu biodata usually carries the nakshatram with padam, rasi, gotram, kuja dosham status, and the date, time and place of birth. With these, the other side's purohit can check the points at once.

In our maker, a Telugu biodata gets the same fields as every other biodata, with no separate Telugu set. The Horoscope section fills rasi, nakshatram, padam and lagnam from the birth details.

Gotra is under Add More Details in that section, and the kuja dosham status you pick goes in the Chevvai / Manglik field. Native Place is in Family Details. For inti peru or kula daivam, use Add Your Own Field. Start with a biodata with horoscope.

Common questions

How Is Horoscope Matching Done in Telugu Families?

Most families check the gotram first, then the nakshatram, then the ashtakoota points out of 36 and kuja dosham. The full jathakam goes to the purohit for a final look.

How Many Points Are Needed in Telugu Marriage Matching?

Most families want 18 or more out of 36, and many prefer 25 or more. A 0 in nadi or bhakoota is treated as a dosha even when the total is good.

What Is Kuja Dosham in Telugu?

Kuja dosham is the Telugu name for manglik dosha, Mars in certain houses of the chart. It is checked separately from the 36 points.

Is Nakshatra Matching Enough in Telugu Families?

Most families check both the nakshatram and the 36 points. Star matching alone is used when the birth time is not known.

Is Gotram Matched in Telugu Marriages?

Yes. Most Telugu Hindu families avoid marriage within the same gotram, and the inti peru alone does not settle it.
