The most common wedding gift in India is still cash in a shagun envelope, usually an amount ending in 1, such as ₹501 or ₹1,101. When you want to give a thing, the best gifts are ones the couple will use in their first home: a mixer grinder, a good pressure cooker, a dinner set or a bedsheet set. Close family often give gold or silver.
Below are ideas sorted by budget and by relation, with a few rules of etiquette that save embarrassment at the reception.
Cash or a Gift, What Indian Couples Prefer
Most couples are happy with cash. A newly married couple has a hundred small expenses, and cash covers any of them. A couple setting up a house in a new city may already have three pressure cookers by the end of the reception.
The extra 1 in ₹501 or ₹1,101 is a custom across North India. The odd amount is considered auspicious, and the 1 is said to stand for a beginning. Many South Indian families follow it too, though some simply give round amounts.
A gift makes sense in three cases:
- You are close to the couple and know what they need.
- You are part of a group of friends or colleagues pooling money for one larger item.
- The family custom is to give a particular thing, such as silver lamps or a set of vessels.
If you give a gift, a small amount of cash with it is also common.
Wedding Gifts by Budget
These are kinds of gifts that usually fit each budget. Prices differ by brand and city, so treat the bands as a guide.
| Budget | Ideas |
|---|---|
| Under ₹500 | A pair of steel tumblers, a small brass or copper pooja item, a photo frame, a box of sweets with a card |
| ₹500 to ₹2,000 | Bedsheet set, a set of kitchen containers, a wall clock, a table lamp, a nameplate for the new home |
| ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 | Dinner set, non-stick cookware set, pressure cooker, electric kettle and toaster, a silk dupatta or stole |
| ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 | Mixer grinder, air fryer, microwave, a silver coin or small silver item, a weekend stay voucher |
| ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 | Water purifier, a good set of luggage, a gold coin of small weight, a group gift from friends |
| Above ₹25,000 | Gold jewellery, a refrigerator or washing machine as a group gift, a honeymoon booking |
Pooling money with four or five friends turns a ₹2,000 budget each into a ₹10,000 gift the couple will use every day.
Wedding Gifts by Relation
For a Best Friend
Give something personal along with something useful. A framed photo of the two of you from college, along with a gift voucher, works better than an expensive item they did not ask for. Many friends also pay for a part of the honeymoon, which couples remember for years.
For the Couple, from Relatives
Practical home items are safest. Ask a cousin what is already on the list, so the couple does not end up with four dinner sets.
For the Bride
From her own family, gold or silver jewellery, silk sarees and kitchen items are common. From friends, a good handbag, a watch, a skincare hamper or a saree she has been wanting.
For the Groom
A watch, a wallet and belt set, a good kurta or sherwani for the reception, or a gadget he really needs. From the bride's family, many communities give a gold chain or ring.
From Colleagues
A group gift with a card signed by the whole team. A small kitchen appliance or a gift voucher from a big online store is easy to choose and easy to carry.
Practical Home Gifts
Newly married couples, especially those setting up a home away from both families, need the boring things most:
- Pressure cooker, in a larger size than a bachelor uses
- Mixer grinder
- Dinner set and a set of steel plates and tumblers for daily use
- Bedsheets and two good towels each
- Iron box
- Water bottles and lunch boxes for the office
In many South Indian families, the bride's family gives a full set of vessels, called seer, as part of the wedding. If you know this is happening, choose something else.
Experience Gifts
An experience suits couples who already have a home set up:
- A night or a weekend at a resort near their city
- A cooking class or a pottery class for two
- A couple photoshoot a few months after the wedding, when they are less tired
- Tickets to a concert or a play they like
Check the dates with the couple or a sibling first. Honeymoon plans and the first round of festival visits fill up the first few months.
Personalised Gifts
- A wooden or brass nameplate with both names, for the new home's door
- The wedding card, framed, with a photo from the wedding
- A caricature of the couple, drawn from their photos
- A recipe book written by both mothers, with the family's dishes
Personalised gifts take two to four weeks to make. Order early.
Gold and Silver Gifts
Gold is the gift elders give most, and the one where a mistake costs the most. Buy only hallmarked gold.
A hallmarked gold item carries a six-character code called the HUID. The Bureau of Indian Standards lets anyone check this code with the "Verify HUID" option in its BIS CARE app, as described on its hallmarking consumer page. Check it in the shop before you pay, and keep the bill in the gift box for the couple.
For silver, buy from a jeweller you know, and keep the bill too.
Gift Etiquette and Timing
- Give the gift at the reception, on the stage, or to a parent of the couple if the queue is long.
- Write your name and relation on the gift or the envelope. "From Ramesh and Sudha (Anjali's uncle)" saves the family guessing.
- Do not put the price tag inside, unless it is a gift receipt for exchange.
- Some families avoid giving knives, scissors or black items at weddings. If you are not sure, choose something else.
- If you cannot attend, send the gift or transfer the shagun before the wedding, with a message.
Gifts to the bride and groom must be given freely. Under section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, presents given at the time of marriage without any demand are not dowry, provided they are entered in a list kept under the Act's rules. Anything demanded by the other side, as a "gift" or otherwise, is dowry.

Common questions
Is Cash or a Gift Better at an Indian Wedding?
Cash is the most common and most couples find it useful. A gift works best when you know what the couple needs, or when a group pools money for one larger item.
How Much Shagun Should I Give?
It depends on how close you are and on your own budget. ₹501, ₹1,101 and ₹2,101 are common amounts, and close family often give more, or gold.
What Is a Useful Wedding Gift in India?
Home items the couple will use daily: a mixer grinder, a pressure cooker, a dinner set or bedsheets. Check with the family so you do not repeat what others are giving.
What Gift Should a Male Friend Give?
A group gift with other friends, a gadget the groom needs, or a share of the honeymoon booking. A framed old photo with a card adds the personal touch.
When Should the Gift Be Given?
At the reception or after the main ritual, on the stage or to a parent. If you cannot attend, send it before the wedding with a message.
