A Porwal marriage biodata writes the religion (Jain or Hindu), the community as "Porwal" or "Porwad" with the group your family belongs to, the gotra, the native place, and the business or job. Porwal families are both Jain and Hindu, so the religion and sect lines decide which families will read your biodata closely.
Porwal families come from southern Rajasthan and today live mostly in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Religion and Sub-Group Lines
The Wikipedia article on the Porwal says the community is mostly Jain or Hindu. It says Visa Porwals tend to be Jain and Dasa Porwals tend to be Vaishnav, and that most Porwal Jains are Shwetambar, with some Digambar families. It also records that the community has 24 gotras.
So a Porwal biodata often has three lines that a general biodata does not:
| Line | Example for a Jain family | Example for a Hindu family |
|---|---|---|
| Religion | Jain | Hindu |
| Sect | Shwetambar Murtipujak | Vaishnav (Pushtimarg), if you follow it |
| Caste / Community | Visa Porwal | Dasa Porwad |
Regional Groups
Many Porwal families also use a regional or samaj name. Padmavati Porwal families are many in the Malwa region of MP, around Indore, Ujjain, Mandsaur and Neemuch. Jangda Porwal is another samaj in the same region. Gujarat has its own Porwad groups.
Write the samaj name your family belongs to, because families in your circle will search by it.
Gotra
Most Porwal families avoid a match in their own gotra, and many also avoid the mother's gotra. Wikipedia mentions 24 gotras but does not name them, and we could not find a reliable list. Ask your elders and write the gotra exactly as they say it.
Our gotra in a marriage biodata post shows how to word the gotra lines.
Native Place, Business and Jobs
Write the native town and the present city. "Native: Mandsaur. Settled in Indore" tells elders where your family stands.
Many Porwal families are in trade. Write the trade, the market and the city:
- Grain and soybean trading, Krishi Upaj Mandi, Neemuch
- Cloth wholesale, Rajwada, Indore
- Software engineer, Pune. Family runs a medical store in Ujjain.
Diet and Horoscope
Jain Porwal families usually write "Jain Food" as the diet, and some add whether they avoid eating after sunset. Hindu Porwal families usually write "Vegetarian".
Many Porwal families, Jain and Hindu, match horoscopes. Keep the time and place of birth exact if yours does.
Notable History
Porwal families remember the brothers Vastupala and Tejapala, ministers of Gujarat in the 13th century, who built the Luna Vasahi temple at Mount Abu in 1231. Wikipedia also credits Dharna Shah, linked to the Ranakpur Jain temple, among Porwal builders. None of this goes on the biodata, but you will hear it at Porwal weddings.
Partner Expectation Lines
Write one or two short lines at the end of About Me. These are the kind Porwal families use:
- Porwal Jain family, Shwetambar preferred. Indore, Ujjain or Mumbai.
- Vaishya family welcome. Gotra should not match ours or our mother's.
- Boy should be settled in a job or the family business.
If your family is open to other Jain communities, such as Oswal or Agarwal Jain, say so. It widens the circle.
