Alliance Biodata Format, and What "Alliance" Means in Marriage

An alliance biodata is a marriage biodata sent when a family is "looking for an alliance", the South Indian way of saying they are searching for a match. The format is the usual one: photo, personal details, horoscope, family details and a parent's contact number, on one A4 page. The only real difference is the short alliance text that often travels with it.

"Alliance" in Indian English simply means a match between two families. You will see it in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam newspapers, in community WhatsApp groups and on matrimony sites.

What Does "Alliance" Mean in Marriage?

In South India, "alliance" is the polite family word for a marriage proposal. A father in Madurai will say "we are seeing alliances for our daughter" where a family in Lucknow would say "we are looking for a rishta".

The word shows up in a few fixed phrases.

PhraseWhat it means
Alliance invitedThe family is open to proposals and wants biodatas
Bride wantedA boy's family is looking for a girl
Groom wantedA girl's family is looking for a boy
Alliance fixedThe match is settled
Suitable allianceA match that fits the family's basic wishes

So an "alliance biodata" is not a separate document. It is the biodata you send in reply to "alliance invited", or the one you share when you put out your own "groom wanted" or "bride wanted" notice.

Alliance Biodata and Proposal Biodata, the Difference

A proposal biodata goes to one family you are already in touch with, usually with a warm covering message from a parent. Our post on the marriage proposal biodata covers that message and the order of sending.

An alliance biodata usually goes out wider. It is posted in a community group, handed to a marriage broker, given to the temple matrimony counter, or sent to ten families who answered an advertisement. That changes two things.

  1. It travels with a short alliance text of four or five lines, which people read before they open the file.
  2. It should hold back more private detail, because many strangers will see it.

The biodata itself stays the same. You do not need two versions.

The Alliance Biodata Format

Fill it in this order, top to bottom. This is the order most South Indian families expect, and it matches how jothidars and brokers read a biodata.

  1. Top line. A god symbol such as Pillaiyar Suzhi or Om if your family uses one, and the title "Marriage Biodata".
  2. One recent photo.
  3. Personal details. Full name, date of birth, time and place of birth, height, religion, caste or community, education, job and the city where the person works.
  4. Horoscope. Rasi, nakshatra with pada, lagnam, chevvai dosham (yes, no or partial) and gothram.
  5. Family details. Father's and mother's names and work, brothers and sisters and whether they are married, native place.
  6. About Me. Three or four plain lines, with any expectation added as one line at the end.
  7. Contact. One parent's mobile number and the city you live in.

If the family follows horoscope matching, attach the jathagam separately or say "jathagam available on request". Our page on the marriage biodata format has the full field list.

About Me: "I work in a cancer research lab in Bengaluru and plan to stay in the city. I like Carnatic music and long walks. We are looking for a well-educated boy from a simple family, working in Bengaluru or Chennai."

Notice the address. It says the area and the town, nothing more. The door number can wait until both families have spoken.

Alliance Text for a Newspaper or WhatsApp Group

The alliance text is the short notice that goes with the biodata. Newspapers charge by the line, so families learned to pack a lot into very few words. The same style now runs in WhatsApp groups.

A groom-wanted text, for the sample above:

> Pillai, 28, M.Sc., research associate in Bengaluru, Bharani star, no dosham, seeks well-educated groom working in Bengaluru or Chennai. Simple family, Thanjavur. Contact 98XXX XXX10.

A bride-wanted text, made up for a boy's family:

> Naidu, 30, B.Tech., software engineer in Hyderabad, own house, Swathi star, seeks educated bride from a good family. Parents in Vijayawada. Biodata and jathagam on request. 97XXX XXX45.

A few habits keep the text useful. Put caste or community first only if your family wants matches from within it. Give the star, since many South Indian families check it before anything else. Leave out salary in a public group and give it on the phone.

Old newspaper ads were full of words about skin colour. Leave them out. Families now find them off-putting, and they say nothing about the person.

Writing the Alliance Biodata in Tamil or Another Language

Many families want the biodata in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam, especially when grandparents or a village astrologer will read it. You can write the whole biodata in one of those languages, or keep it in English with the horoscope terms in your own language.

Pick one and stay with it. A biodata that switches between Tamil and English in every row is hard to read. If the boy's or girl's side lives abroad, English is usually the safer choice for the biodata, and the alliance text can be in both.

Where to Send the Alliance Biodata

PlaceWhat to send first
Community WhatsApp groupThe alliance text only, "biodata on request"
Newspaper matrimonial columnThe alliance text, paid by the line
Marriage broker or temple counterThe printed biodata and a copy of the jathagam
A family that replied to your adThe biodata PDF with a short message
Matrimony siteA profile written in your own words, plus the biodata if asked

Sending only the text first is a good habit for big groups. The families who reply are the ones who are really interested, and your daughter's or son's photo does not end up in fifty phones. Our guide on how to write a matrimony profile helps with the site version.

Making the Alliance Biodata Online

Our free biodata maker has the four sections in the order above: Personal Details, Horoscope, Family Details and Contact Details. Rasi, nakshatra with pada and lagna fill themselves in from the date, time and place of birth, and the family can change them. Gotra is an extra chip in the Horoscope section, and anything else, like "Jathagam: available on request", goes in Add Your Own Field.

It prints in 12 languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. You get an A4 PDF and a JPG image, and after that an editable Word file of the same biodata. The free download has a small "Made free at hellobiodata.com" line at the bottom.

Common questions

What Is an Alliance Biodata?

It is a marriage biodata shared when a family is looking for an alliance, meaning a match. The format is the same as any marriage biodata: photo, personal details, horoscope, family details and contact.

What Does "Alliance Invited" Mean?

It means the family is open to proposals and invites others to send a biodata. "Bride wanted" and "groom wanted" say which side is searching.

What Should I Write in an Alliance Advertisement?

Community, age, education, job and city, the star if your family checks it, what you are looking for in one line, and a phone number. Keep it to four or five lines.

Should the Alliance Biodata Include Salary?

Only if you want to. In a public group it is better to leave it out and share it on the phone with families who are serious.

Can I Make an Alliance Biodata in Tamil?

Yes. You can write the whole biodata in Tamil, or keep English with Tamil terms for rasi and nakshatra. Use one language through the whole page.
