There is no muhurat in Islam, so a nikah can be held on any day of the year, in any month. Even so, Indian Muslim families have clear habits. Shawwal, the month after Ramadan, is a favourite, and in 2027 it is expected to begin around 10 March. Many families avoid holding the nikah during Ramadan and in Muharram, especially its first ten days.
Islamic months follow the Moon, so every date below depends on the moon sighting announced in your city.
Does a Nikah Need a Muhurat?
No. A nikah is valid on any day when the conditions of the contract are met: the consent of the bride and the groom, the mahr, and witnesses. There is no list of auspicious or inauspicious days in the way a Hindu panchang has one.
What families do follow is custom and practicality. Some months suit a celebration better than others, and some carry religious meaning that makes a wedding feast feel out of place.
Why Shawwal Is Popular
Shawwal comes straight after Ramadan, and Eid-ul-Fitr is its first day. In Sahih Muslim, a hadith reports Aisha saying that the Prophet married her in Shawwal, and that she liked the women of her family to be married in Shawwal. The collection places it under a chapter on the merit of marrying in that month. You can read it on Sunnah.com.
There is a practical side too. Families are already together for Eid, and relatives from the Gulf or other cities often take leave around it.
Islamic Months in 2027 and Their Expected Dates
The central government's holiday list for 2027, a DoPT order dated 16 July 2026, fixes four Muslim holidays for its Delhi offices. Id-ul-Fitr is on Wednesday 10 March, Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) on Monday 17 May, Muharram (Ashura) on Wednesday 16 June, and Milad-un-Nabi on Sunday 15 August. Working back from those days gives the approximate start of each month.
| Islamic month | Expected in 2027 (India) | What it means for a nikah |
|---|---|---|
| Ramadan | About 9 February to 9 March | Fasting month. Most families do not hold the wedding feast now. |
| Shawwal | From about 10 March (Eid-ul-Fitr) to early April | The most popular month for nikah. |
| Dhul Qadah | About April to early May | Open for weddings. |
| Dhul Hijjah | From about 8 May; Bakrid on 17 May | Families busy with Hajj and Qurbani in the first ten days. Open after Bakrid. |
| Muharram (new year 1449) | From about 7 June; Ashura on 16 June | Many families avoid the nikah, especially in the first ten days. |
| Safar | About July | Some families avoid it by custom; Islamic teaching does not. |
| Rabi-ul-Awwal | From about 4 August; Milad-un-Nabi on 15 August | Open for weddings. |
These are planning dates, not fixed ones. Each month begins when the new crescent is sighted, and the local Ruet-e-Hilal committee or your mosque announces it. The real start can be a day earlier or later than shown here. Gulf countries often begin a month a day before India.
Can Nikah Be Done During Ramadan?
Yes. Islamic law does not forbid a nikah in Ramadan. In practice most Indian Muslim families wait until after Eid, because the day is spent fasting and a walima feast is hard to hold. Some couples do a simple nikah after iftar in Ramadan and keep the celebration for Shawwal.
Can We Marry in Muharram?
Islamic law does not forbid it either. But Muharram, and especially the first ten days up to Ashura, is a time of mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Husain at Karbala. Shia families keep these days in mourning and do not hold weddings. Many Sunni families in India also avoid weddings in the first ten days out of respect, and some avoid the whole month.
So if the families are from different traditions, talk about Muharram early. In 2027 Muharram is expected to begin around 7 June, and Ashura falls on 16 June in the central government's list.
Nikah Planning from November 2026 to December 2027
| Period | Expected Islamic month | Suitability |
|---|---|---|
| November to December 2026 | Months before Ramadan | Open; a common time for winter weddings |
| January to early February 2027 | Shaban and the run-up to Ramadan | Open; many families finish weddings before Ramadan |
| About 9 February to 9 March 2027 | Ramadan | Usually avoided for the feast |
| About 10 March to early April 2027 | Shawwal | Most popular |
| April to May 2027 | Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah | Open, apart from Bakrid days |
| June 2027 | Muharram | Often avoided, especially to 16 June |
| July to December 2027 | Safar onwards | Open; winter months are popular again |
For the exact day, ask your local mosque or qazi a few weeks before. They will know the local sighting and their own availability.
Community and Regional Variation
Practice differs between communities. Kerala, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Mumbai families each have their own customs about the nikah, the walima and the gap between them. Dawoodi Bohra families follow their own calculated calendar, so their dates can differ from the local sighting. Ask the elders and the qazi who will read the nikah.
Many families also look at the Gregorian calendar for practical reasons. School holidays, Gulf leave cycles and the wedding hall's own calendar often decide more than the Islamic month does.
Booking and Practical Timelines
- Decide the month first, then fix the hall. Halls get busy around Shawwal and the winter months.
- If you choose Shawwal, remember that the first days are Eid holidays. Caterers and staff may be on leave.
- Keep a fallback date a week later, in case the moon sighting moves Eid by a day.
- Book the qazi early. In busy weeks a qazi may have several nikahs on one day.
- Plan the walima date at the same time as the nikah.
